Here we provide an overview of just some of the opportunities Newport, RI, and its surrounding towns, Middletown, Portsmouth, Tiverton, and Jamestown, offer equestrian aficionados.

The Newport International Polo Series

250 Linden Ln, Portsmouth, RI 02871

The Newport International Polo Series reigns as the most anticipated equestrian event in Newport County, drawing throngs of spectators to witness the thrilling matches. Established as America’s first polo club when it was founded in Newport in 1886, it now resides at Glen Farm in nearby Portsmouth, RI, a site whose heritage dates back over 370 years. Today, spectators dress in their finest “Newport Casual Chic” each Saturday, June through September, to watch their home team, USA/Newport, compete against teams from across six continents. Proudly sponsored by Hogan Associates Christie’s International Real Estate, this event showcases the exceptional bond between Newport County and its love for equestrian sports. Each season, Hogan Associates reserves a prestigious tailgate spot and invites agents and clients to enjoy an afternoon at one of the earliest international sporting events.

Coaching Weekend

Every three years, impeccably restored coaches and horses arrive in Newport driven by their skilled handlers for four days. Newport’s Gilded Age summer cottages and century-old beech trees provide a stunning backdrop to the event. Nineteenth-century elegance comes to life as horse-drawn coaches parade through the streets of Newport and the grounds of Newport’s mansions. This delightful tradition, originally hailing from England, found its way to Newport in the 1880s, courtesy of the esteemed Alfred Gwynne Vanderbilt. The event culminates in the grand finale—an elegant black-tie Coaching Dinner Dance hosted in one of Newport’s most splendid Gilded Age mansions.
