Bill Heydt has played a pivotal role in preserving Newport’s cultural identity through his evocative watercolor paintings. A graduate of the Rhode Island School of Design, he refined his craft studying printmaking under Stanley William Hayter in Paris before ultimately making Newport his home. Heydt is best known for his compelling portraits of local residents in their work environments, capturing the essence of the city’s diverse community with striking authenticity.

His book, Working Newport, is a collection of over 200 watercolors created over two decades, offering an intimate glimpse into the lives of Newport’s inhabitants—from fishermen to bookbinders. Through his art, Heydt weaves a rich visual narrative that not only honors individual stories but also embodies the collective spirit of Newport.

We are especially honored that Leslie Hogan and Matt Hadfield, co-owners of Hogan Associates Christie’s International, are featured in Heydt’s celebrated book!

Sara Wuerstle: Cultivating Sustainability at Ocean Hour Farm

Ocean Hour Farm spans 43.2 acres of coastal pastures and a historic stone village, serving as a hub for education, research, and regenerative agriculture. The farm demonstrates sustainable practices that connect land and ocean health, sequester carbon, clean stormwater, enrich soil, and produce food and fiber for the community.

Leading this mission is Sara Wuerstle, whose passion for environmental preservation and local resilience drives the farm’s success. With a background in environmental science and community organizing, she bridges ecology and social impact. Under her leadership, Ocean Hour Farm partners with local restaurants to supply fresh produce and collaborates with nonprofits to provide food to underserved communities—reinforcing Sara’s belief that true sustainability supports both nature and people.

Heather Abbott: Turning Tragedy into Hope

Heather Abbott’s life changed forever when she survived the Boston Marathon bombing in 2013, losing her leg in the attack. Rather than letting the tragedy define her, she turned her experience into a mission to help others. She founded the Heather Abbott Foundation, which provides customized prostheses to individuals who have lost limbs, empowering them to regain not just mobility but also confidence and independence. These prostheses enable recipients to pursue the activities they love—from running and swimming to dancing—restoring a sense of normalcy and joy.

Beyond prosthetic grants, Abbott’s foundation offers emotional support and advocacy, ensuring amputees have access to the resources they need to thrive. A Newport resident, her unwavering dedication has touched countless lives, making her a symbol of resilience, generosity, and hope for those facing similar challenges.

Bert Lippincott: Guardian of Newport’s History

Bert Lippincott, the dedicated librarian at the Newport Historical Society, is instrumental in preserving and sharing Newport’s rich history. Through his expert stewardship of the Society’s vast archives—including rare manuscripts, photographs, and artifacts—he ensures that the city’s past remains accessible to researchers, historians, and the community.

Bert’s deep knowledge and research expertise are invaluable to us at Hogan Associates, helping us uncover the stories behind Newport’s historic homes. His commitment to archival excellence not only enriches public understanding of Newport’s heritage but also strengthens the community’s connection to its remarkable past.

Tom Gibson: Steering Seaman’s Church Institute Forward

Tom Gibson, president of the board at Seaman’s Church Institute in Newport, Rhode Island, is a dedicated leader whose vision and commitment have been instrumental in advancing the institute’s mission. Founded in 1919, Seaman’s Church Institute has long served as a haven for mariners, offering essential services such as hospitality, education, and emergency assistance to those who work at sea.

With extensive experience in maritime affairs and nonprofit management, Tom has worked tirelessly to enhance programs that support seafarers and their families, ensuring that Newport’s rich maritime traditions are both preserved and celebrated. Under his guidance, the institute has strengthened its community outreach, continuing to serve as a vital resource for sailors, maritime professionals, and the broader Newport community. His strategic leadership and passion for Newport’s maritime heritage have made him a respected figure and a driving force behind the institute’s ongoing success.
