The clip-clop of hooves on grass. The thwack of mallet meeting ball. A pop of champagne. These are the sounds of summer Saturdays in Portsmouth, Rhode Island, where polo is more than a pastime—it’s a living tradition. From the emerald fields of Glen Farm, the Newport International Polo Series returns for its 2025 season, and with it comes a celebration of sport, culture, and coastal flair. Set on land with over 370 years of history, Glen Farm is no ordinary sports venue—it’s a pastoral estate where time seems to slow down just enough for a match to unfold with old-world elegance.
Hogan Associates is proud to be a part of it all, offering our clients and friends a front-row seat to one of Aquidneck Island’s most iconic rituals.
The Original American Home of Polo
Newport’s roots in polo run deep. The inaugural International Polo Cup was held here in 1886, at the Westchester Polo Club, marking Newport as the original American home of international polo.
For nearly 40 golden years, Newport reigned as the capital of the sport, hosting transatlantic matches that brought royalty, aristocrats, and roaring crowds to the shores of Narragansett Bay. That era faded under the weight of world wars and shifting economies, but like any good summer ritual, it returned in time—with a fresh twist: global teams, open-air picnics, and a spirited blend of tradition and modern hospitality. What began in the Gilded Age as a transatlantic rivalry has blossomed into a truly international celebration of sport and style.
Polo, With a Passport
Today, the Newport International Polo Series welcomes teams from six continents and all walks of life. One week, you’re watching a match against Argentina. The next? South Africa or Italy. Matches showcase elite amateur talent alongside seasoned international stars like Francisco Lanusse and Patrick Guerrand-Hermès.
The tone is cosmopolitan, but never stiff. Guests are as likely to be sipping rosé on gingham blankets as they are seated in crisp linen inside a private box. It’s a summer social scene with a sporty soul.
