Donny Barley: Community, Skateboarding, and Real Estate

Every Realtor brings their own life experiences to the profession, but some life experiences are more remarkable than others. Take Donny Barley, for example—a celebrated professional skateboarder and Newport, RI resident who now shapes the community not only through real estate but also through initiatives like Newport’s upcoming skatepark.

A Skateboarding Legacy

Donny’s skateboarding career has taken him around the world and inspired countless skaters along the way. His signature trick, the Barley Grind, has been performed by elite skaters, even making an appearance in the 2024 Olympics.

Beyond his personal achievements, he recently led a camp at Newport’s International Yacht Restoration School (IYRS), where kids not only learned how to skateboard but also how to build their own boards. “It was amazing to watch them craft something with their own hands and then skate on it,” Donny says. “It’s about more than just skating—it’s creativity, problem-solving, and perseverance.”

The values Donny learned through skateboarding—creativity, problem-solving, and perseverance—inform his approach to real estate. His experience navigating challenges on the skateboard helps him assist buyers and sellers as they work through the complexities of the market.

Newport’s New Skatepark: A Community Effort

For nearly two decades, Newport residents have dreamed of building a skatepark that could serve as a hub for the town’s active skate scene. Donny joined forces with a dedicated group of locals, including Sid Abruzzi—a Newport legend in both skateboarding and surfing, bring this vision to life. Their community fundraising effort received support from many people, leading to the groundbreaking for the park in early 2024.

The support we received was incredible,” Donny notes. “It just goes to show how much skateboarding and community are intertwined. People from all over wanted to help build something special here in Newport.”

Building a Skatepark for Everyone

As the Design Director for the skatepark, Donny worked closely with Spohn Ranch to ensure it caters to all skill levels. “I became the design filter, taking input from surfers, skaters, and the community to create a park that suits all levels,” Donny explains. The goal was clear: build the best skatepark in New England, one that’s inclusive for all.

This park isn’t just a place for seasoned skateboarders. It’s designed for families, kids, and anyone curious about the sport. “I’m excited about skating there myself, but even more excited to share my experience with the next generation,” Donny says, smiling. “I can be the skatepark grandpa, sharing stories and techniques.”

Beyond the Park

The skatepark is just the beginning. Friends of Newport Skatepark hopes to offer programming like skate lessons, workshops, and camps. “We’re excited about the future possibilities for the skatepark and how it can continue to evolve as a vibrant community space for events, gatherings, and activities.” Donny is particularly excited about the potential for the park to bring people together and foster a sense of belonging.

Building a Community Together

Through skateboarding, Donny has learned the importance of community, resilience, and collaboration—qualities he now applies to his work with Hogan Associates. As a local resident who understands Newport’s unique blend of outdoor adventure and close-knit community, Donny is eager to help families and individuals find their place in this remarkable town.

This town offers an incredible quality of life,” Donny says. “From the beaches to the parks, and now with the skatepark, there’s so much to love about Newport. I want to help people not just find a house here but truly become part of the community.”

Whether fundraising for the skatepark or assisting clients with real estate transactions, Donny is committed to supporting the Newport community. If you’re looking to buy or sell in Newport, he aims to help you find a place that fits your needs and connects you to the community.
