The Newport, Rhode Island real estate team seeks photos that capture the spirit of its core message that homeownership is “not just about the real estate.” One winning image will be selected for a full-page Hogan Associates’ color magazine ad with photo credit and a $500 cash prize. Three additional prizes will be awarded for Second Place, Third Place, and the People’s Choice Award. These contestants will receive “Shop Greater Newport” gift cards from the Chamber of Commerce…redeemable at their choice of hundreds of local businesses. The Second Place winner will receive a $300 gift card, the third place winner will receive a $200 gift card, and the winner of the People’s Choice Award will receive a $100 gift card.

Planning the Perfect Picnic in and Around Newport, RI

Picnics evoke a sense of nostalgia, relaxation, and the luxury of being “off the clock.” Since many people are spending more time outdoors, some of Rhode Island’s food providers have made it easier to enjoy a meal in the grass or on the sands of Newport.

Delivery or DIY

There are many ways to create a picnic. Either dust off that beautiful picnic basket set that your Aunt gifted you, or hire a local service to bring their bounty to you.

Pop-up picnics — which started on the West Coast — are now thriving in New England. Whether you’re celebrating a birthday, romancing your partner, or bringing the family together, the options range from elegant to casual.

Up and Out

Premier Picnics is a luxury picnic planning service that operates all over Rhode Island. They offer five different curated experiences with themes like “farmhouse,” “urban,” and most appropriately for Newport: “nautical.”

Each picnic experience includes all furnishings and linens, dinnerware and cutlery, so there’s nothing you need to bring except your appetite. Each small table is decorated like a magazine photo, complete with mood-enhancing candles and fresh flowers. Premier Picnic’s luxury meals start at $200 for two people. Gift certificates are also available.

Another high-end option is Stoneacre Picnics, recently launched by the popular Newport restaurant of the same name. Their talented chefs offer four different menus, including a “Parisien Lunch” or “Polo Picnic.” The full-service packages come with a low table or blanket, pretty place settings, and lanterns. For that added touch, upgrades include rose petals and bubbly.

These memorable picnics start at $325 for two guests. Stoneacre’s “Grab and Go Picnics” are also available for $149 and can be picked up at the Brasserie.

Pack and Play

If you’d rather prep the picnic yourself (maybe invite the kids to help?), choose items that are easy to transport and the opposite of messy (skip the spaghetti sauce). Foods that can be prepared ahead of time are a great idea.

As a hybrid solution, pick up your provisions at a sandwich shop or farm stand. Sweet Berry Farm in Middletown offers a To Go Menu of pre-packed lunches, hearty salads, and other delicious treats. An advance three-day notice is recommended for all orders. (It’s worth noting that this fun and fresh market was named “Best Family Picnic” by Rhode Island Monthly in 2011.)

Another fun picnic event is returning this year! NewportFILM will resume its annual picnic contest with the theme “Go Green: Zero-Waste Picnic.” Enter your own chic and sustainable spread and indulge as you enjoy a documentary screening. Choosing the Perfect Spot

In addition to planning your menu, you’ll want to choose a location for your alfresco escapade (say that three times fast!). Each delivery service has a specific list of sites where they are allowed to set up, from public parks to local beaches. For a unique experience, Stoneacre can also serve at the Newport Polo Grounds or on the historic landscapes of three of the city’s renowned mansions.

Colt State Park in Bristol is a great option (also served by Premier Picnics). If you’re packing your own picnic, grab an open picnic table or set up your blanket on the beach. History buffs might enjoy Fort Adams State Park with its majestic views of Newport Harbor. To combine exercise and eating, fill your backpack and bike to Bristol’s Independence Park. Or, don a bathing suit and head to one of the coast’s beautiful beaches. Just make sure to check the state’s website for services and amenities, and don’t forget to bring a trash bag so you can leave it as you found it.

Whether you choose to hire one of the area’s culinary creators or build your own basket, remember to savor the flavors, breathe in that fresh air, and cherish the memories that you are creating. (Now, could someone please help me straighten out this blanket?)

Slice of Heaven

Middletown

Diego’s Cantina

Enjoy fabulous Tex-Mex cuisine and a fun atmosphere. The back deck provides sweeping views of Easton’s Pond, along with killer sunsets. Reject’s Beer Co.
Pop by the area’s newest craft brewery named after the local “Rejects’ Beach” and sip a pint in a hip, laid-back atmosphere. Portsmouth

15 Pt. Road

Gulf Stream Bar and Grille

Whether you drive or dock your boat at this local gem, you’ll enjoy this lively spot located off the beaten path. Situated at Narragansett Bay’s largest marina, it serves fresh, coastal cuisine and a family-friendly atmosphere that makes it a great spot to bring your whole crew. They even have a Doggie Menu! Tiverton

Boat House Waterfront Dining

How to Prepare a Real New England Clambake

One of the best ways to enjoy Rhode Island is through its cuisine. Local favorites include fried calamari (the official state appetizer!), stuffies (also known as stuffed quahogs), and clam chowder (New England or Rhode Island style? The debate rages on.). But for a truly unique Rhode Island experience, you’ll need to try a classic New England clambake prepared outdoors and on a summer day. The traditional method is pit-style, as opposed to the stovetop approach, and is as much about the preparation, scenery, and the company as it is the ingredients.

A Real New England Clambake: The Basics

While you can certainly have a two-person clambake, it’s best enjoyed with a group. Since it will take around four hours to prepare, you can plan to spend the afternoon enjoying the people you’re with while your shellfish steams. Plus, you’ll be glad to have extra hands to help dig the hole, prepare the fire, and drape the canvas over the pit. A traditional clambake is not trivial, but it’s worth it.

Classic New England Clambake Ingredients

A classic New England clambake calls for lobsters and clams. They should be fresh and locally caught, purchased live and cleaned on the same day as the clambake. It can also include everything from fish, chicken, or sausage along with potatoes, onions, and corn on the cob.

Clambake Preparation

Ah, the preparation is what really sets a clambake apart from a regular seafood dinner! It starts with a clambake pit, which is dug on a beach in classic preparation but can also be done in the backyard, away from trees and overhanging branches. (Keep in mind, if you’re creating a beach pit, you’ll want to check on the rules for beach cooking in that area.)

The pit is usually about three feet deep and filled with stones or rocks. A wood fire is lit to make the rocks piping hot. After several hours and once the fire is down to embers, it’s ready to heat the food.

The shellfish is not cooked over the open fire. Instead, it’s combined in a sack made of cheesecloth where the corn and fork-pierced potatoes are also wrapped in foil before going into the bag and onto the embers. A few inches of wet seaweed (preferably rockweed) is placed over the sack to aid in steaming, then the entire pit is covered with a seawater-soaked piece of canvas or burlap secured across the top.

The meal cooks for up to two hours before the sack is opened and it’s spread out across a table and served as-is or buffet style with the ingredients separated. Don’t forget the drawn butter!

Because a lot of time and effort goes into hosting a clambake, it’s well worth it to seek help from the pros. Several established Rhode Island clambake companies will prepare everything for you so you can sit back and enjoy along with your guests.

The Best Boating Destinations in Jamestown, Rhode Island

Mackerel Cove

This special spot is sometimes called Jamestown’s hidden gem and for good reason. It’s also known as Jamestown Town Beach and connects the two pieces of land that form Conanicut Island. It’s a favorite stop for locals of all ages. Snorkel and fish from your boat with a breathtaking backdrop, or drop anchor and row or paddle to shore to enjoy the tranquil waters known for great swimming.

Fort Wetherill

On the southeastern tip of Jamestown’s Conanicut Island sits Fort Wetherill State Park — more than 60 sweeping acres designated for public recreation. It’s a beautiful setting, with panoramic views of Narragansett Bay. Once used as a vantage point during the Revolutionary War, the protected coves of Fort Wetherill now make it a popular spot for scuba diving, snorkeling, and spearfishing.

Great Boating Stops in Newport, Rhode Island

Rose Island

This local treasure, only accessible by boat, is a must-visit. It’s an 18-acre secluded island with a striking view of the Pell Bridge. Beach your boat or drop off guests (no anchoring or tying up at the dock is permitted). Tour the lighthouse museum, explore the grounds, or enjoy some top-notch bird-watching as the island is home to egrets, snowy egrets, and glossy ibis. This is also a great area for canoeing and kayaking. Visitors are welcome to spend the night on the Island with reservations, making Rose Island one of the few lighthouses in the United States that allow overnight guests. Daily admission fees apply for all visitors to benefit the Rose Island Foundation.

Gooseberry Beach

Anchoring your boat at this popular, public Newport beach located along famous Ocean Drive is a wonderful option since its parking lot is known to fill up fast. Gooseberry Beach is for great swimming and a truly family-friendly experience. The cove-like area offers minimal waves for a calm, peaceful way to enjoy the ocean.

Fort Adams State Park

This historic site makes a great boating destination. You can enjoy the music of the Newport Folk Festival or Jazz Festival held annually at Fort Adams from your boat but plan to arrive early and stay a while since traffic in the bay is heavy on festival days. Fort Adams’ 6+ acres is full of history and offers unrivaled sweeping views of the Pell Bridge and Narragansett Bay. There is a courtesy dock in front of the park visitor center available for pickups and drop-offs.

There are also plenty of public dinghy docking options available, from daily, transient to overnight docks, which the City of Newport conveniently lists here.

Where to Go Boating in Portsmouth, Rhode Island

Dyer Island

On the west side of Aquidneck Island, with Weaver Cove to the southeast. Only a half a mile long, Dyer Island feels like a true escape and is known for the best-around beachcombing and bird-watching thanks to undisturbed salt marshes. There’s no place to dock, but it’s a great place to anchor and wade ashore at your leisure. Remember to plan your visit outside of nesting season!

Gull Cove

Boat right on into this beautiful spot and anchor down to enjoy scenic views of the Sakonnet and Mount Hope Bay, great for small boat exploration. This is a well-protected cove that’s known for its kayaking, bird-watching, and especially fishing. If you feel like going ashore, there’s also a beach walk and good shoreline fishing, but it’s important to know that swimming isn’t recommended here.

Potter Cove (Prudence Island)

Facing the East Passage of Narragansett Bay, Potter Cove is on Prudence Island — an inhabited island and local gem off the coast of Portsmouth. Its sandy beach, idyllic picnic spots, fishing, and kayaking opportunities make it a great spot for family retreats. Bonus points for breathtaking views! There are no public moorings at Potter Cove, but you are welcome to anchor within the cove itself. Keep in mind, it can get awfully busy, so head over early and plan to spend the day. Speaking of busy, if a giant floating boating party is your thing, check out Aquapalooza, held here annually as a celebration of boating life. It typically attracts hundreds of boats at a time, so plan to join in, or steer clear if you’re after a low-key visit!

Our Pick for Dock-to-Dining Restaurant in Portsmouth

Dock at the Safe Harbor Marina to enjoy Gulf Stream Bar & Grille. It’s known for coastal cuisine that’s a favorite among the locals, who are partial to their Cuban and cajun offerings, Bermuda fish chowder, and more. Beyond its eclectic menu, it offers stunning sunset and harbor views and is a dog-friendly option for outdoor deck dining if you’ve got your furry friends in tow.

Grinnell’s Beach

The Sakonnet River is a must-experience when boating in Newport County, and Grinnell’s Beach is a fantastic spot for checking it out. Fish at the Stone Bridge Pier or enjoy a beach day on the sandy beach nearby while taking in gorgeous views of the Sakonnet as well as Gould Island.

Nanaquacket Pond

If you’re boating on the Sakonnet River, you can easily slip into the pond by passing under the Nanaquacket Bridge. Bring along a kayak, standup paddleboard, or a fishing pole to catch a few scup. Nanaquacket Pond is known for the calm waters of its protected cove. It’s also home to Evelyn’s Drive-In restaurant, with dock space available to pick up your meal and dine at anchor on the water. Try some of their famed clam cakes and fish ‘n chips.
