An Ideal Day in Newport, RI: Through the Eyes of Our Agents

An Ideal Day in Newport, RI: Through the Eyes of Our Agents

Newport, Rhode Island, has a way of captivating the heart, whether it’s the salty breeze off the harbor, the historic streets lined with charming homes, or the vibrant local culture. At Hogan Associates, our agents know Newport intimately, and each has their own vision of the perfect day in this coastal gem. Here’s a glimpse into what an ideal day looks like for four of us, across the seasons.

Springtime Strolls and Dog-Friendly EscapesShannon Walker

For Shannon, spring is the perfect season to soak in Newport’s rejuvenating energy. Her day begins with a warm croissant and coffee at Picnic on Bellevue. “If the weather’s uncooperative, we’ll stay inside, read the paper, and chat with [cafe owner] John and other locals,” she says. With Hanzo, her loyal pup, by her side, Shannon heads to Ballard Park (affectionately called “The Canyon” by native Newporters) where Hanzo can run freely and maybe make a new canine friend. Lunch is a delight at Corner Cafe on Broadway, savoring a California Benny or Boru Noodle Bar for ramen bowls. The afternoon is for exploring vintage stores for unique homewares, stopping by a nearby garden shop for inspiration, and driving to Hazards to watch the baby ospreys. A walk along the Historic Point to admire spring blooms or a visit to Sachuest to catch glimpses of pheasants and deer rounds out the day. Dinner is simple and local either Thames Street Kitchen or Stoneacre Pantry where fresh, seasonal cuisine completes her idyllic spring day.

Autumn Adventures on the WaterChris Davis

Chris finds fall in Newport simply magical. He loves an early September morning at Springline Coffee on Bannister’s Wharf with his wife and four kids before setting out for a harbor cruise aboard a 44-foot Hinckley. “There’s nothing like buzzing under the Newport Bridge and past Castle Hill Inn with the family,” Chris notes. Lunch is casual and convenient at Belle’s Cafe at the Newport Shipyard. After a hearty meal, the afternoon calls for some downtime—a family nap to recharge. The day winds down with a dinner at 22 Bowen’s, followed by a classic Newport treat: ice cream at Ben & Jerry’s. For Chris, the simple joy of spending the day with family and enjoying everything Newport has to offer makes it perfect.

Family Fun and Neighborhood CharmJeff Brooks

Fall is also Jeff’s favorite season, a time to enjoy Newport’s crisp air and outdoor spaces. His morning starts at home with a Custom House coffee, tending to his garden, and, if lucky, a quick stop at Gooseberry Beach or a boat ride. A harbor tour is always on the agenda, perhaps paired with a lobster roll or a drink at Malt On Broadway. Lunch options vary from Ben’s Chili Dogs on Broadway to Sunrise Cafe in Middletown or Bar Cino on Washington Square. After a nap at home, Jeff enjoys an afternoon walk or boat ride with his wife Marina and kids Wyatt and Nora, sometimes joined by the boys’ dogs, Phil and Enzo. Dinner is neighborhood favorite Malt, though The Mooring or 22 Bowen’s are always tempting. Personal touches, like Wyatt biking along the new path by the old rail line, make the day unforgettable.

Summer Days of Sun and SeaPaige Goudey

Paige’s ideal Newport day shines in summer. She starts at Empire Coffee on Broadway with a morning vanilla latte, often accompanied by her chow chow, Pippa, and a friendly wave from locals. Paige and her husband Ryan enjoy time outdoors boating, taking a dip, or spending a long day at Second Beach or Gooseberry Beach with friends. Lunch is casual at The Protective Club, perfect for recharging between adventures. In the afternoon, she loves dropping by the Audrain Museum to admire classic cars. Dinner is a culinary highlight at Gusto, where the tasting menu is an experience not to be missed. And for Paige, a perfect summer day often ends with a mudslide at Marina Cafe, connecting with locals and soaking in the vibrant community atmosphere.

From spring blooms to summer sunshine, and crisp autumn air to cozy afternoons, Newport offers something special throughout the year. Many locals enjoy the winter months for their slower pace. Wrap your hands around a steaming cup from The Chanler’s Hot Chocolate Bar overlooking Easton’s Beach, glide across the ice at the rink on Goat Island in the middle of Narragansett Bay, and wander the twinkling streets, where Newport decks itself out for Christmas. The two-week Newport Winter Festival in February adds extra excitement with outdoor gatherings, food events, fire pits, and live music. Even in the colder months, Newport’s scenic coastline, historic charm, and welcoming community make it a place worth savoring.
